What is an educational advocate?
An educational advocate is someone who works with parents and schools to help bridge any communication gaps or misunderstandings when it comes to school meetings, more specifically, special education meetings. These meetings can be very emotional for parents/caretakers as they discuss a student's possible shortcomings. As a mom of a student on an Individualized Education Program (IEP), I know firsthand how challenging it can be to hear these things, even when you already know that they exist. I have also worked in education for the majority of my adult life, making me uniquely qualified to assist parents in understanding the entire IEP process and what it means for their children. I understand what the schools are capable of and what their limitations are.
Why Do I Need an Education Advocate?
If you are new to the world of special education, there are a lot of terms you may be unfamiliar with. There are also a lot of laws, both at the state and federal level, that help ensure that your child is in the least restrictive environment and getting a free and fair education. Advocates help individuals understand their rights, communicate effectively with schools, and work towards resolving issues to ensure a fair and supportive educational experience. When you have an advocate there to help, things tend to move much more smoothly, as we are there to work with the schools to ensure proper accommodations and help navigate the complex educational processes.
If you are not new to the world of special education, maybe you struggle to communicate your needs effectively, maybe you just want another set of eyes on the IEP, maybe you just want someone to talk through everything with after you have had a chance to process. Whatever it may be, having an advocate that is on your side and your child's side will help ensure that things run smoothly for all.
